Terri and (Western) Holy Week

Has anyone noticed the parallels here to the crucifixion of Christ? The suspect witness, the court of elders, Pontius Pilate, the clammering crowds approving the injustice, the grieving mother at the cross? The fact that this unfolded during (Western) Holy Week — Terri might even die on Good Friday — is a warning to us I think. In October, 2003 I wrote a piece about Terri Schiavo expressing the idea that she suffers as a martyr. The timing of her death may prove this true.

This is just horrible. May God have mercy on us.

  1. It’s too obvious not to point out how many government officials have washed their hands of her, said it’s not their problem…

  2. Daniel,

Makes you wonder, doesn’t it? All those people who are suddenly born-again Libertarians arguing that we should ‘keep the government out of a private family matter.’ That picture you posted seems to indicate that the government is neck-deep in this. Or, I should say, one branch of the government is neck-deep in this.

If the coercive power of the state were not in play, then Terri’s parents would be feeding her and giving her water right now.

What I want to know is – what are those cops thinking? Do they really think God cares about their excuses? “I was only following orders!” That excuse didn’t wash at Nuremberg, and it won’t wash at the Last Judgement either. I’d quit my job before I’d take a boy into custody for giving a woman a drink of water.

In the military, soldiers and Marines are given classes on legal versus illegal orders. Following a clearly illegal order subjects the enlisted man to potential prosecution. It is probably time that churches start offering such classes for their members who are on the police force.

After all, if police will do this – what won’t they do? If courts extend hate crimes laws to cover preaching against sexual sins – will the police arrest the priests just because the courts say so? Will Father Hans’ site get him arrested at some point in the future?

  3. Where is PETA when you need them? Here they were a year ago calling the killing of chickens a “Holocaust” and running a “fish have feelings” campaign just a few months back. One would have thought that Terry’s life would be worth at least as much as a fish’s.

Were are living in unbelievable dark and depressing times. People ask how the atrocities of communism and nazism were allowed to happen. Here we go, one baby step at a time….

    Lord Have Mercy!
