Acton’s Jordan Ballor jumps on the NCC’s silly “eco-justice” objections to bottled water
Breakpoint.org Mark Earley January 24, 2007
Undoubtedly many of the great evils of our times have been committed because the cries of the victims were not heard—not heard by those who sat by, comfortably ignorant of the horrors around them. In early nineteenth-century England, few citizens had any real understanding that the lump of sugar they dropped in their afternoon tea was made at the high price of human bondage. The screams of men and women branded or whipped on West Indies sugar plantations were not heard in the fashionable parlors of England. Not until, that is, the great Christian statesman William Wilberforce launched his crusade against the slave trade.
Today, some two hundred years later, there are victims whose agony our ears will never hear. These are the unborn victims of abortion.
Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court’s infamous decision legalizing abortion, was the Pearl Harbor of America’s culture war. It is now clear that a majority of the justices were determined to legalize abortion, and their challenge was to find some constitutional argument in support.
The IRD criticism of the NCC (discussed here earlier) is getting some good discussion at the Get Religion blog.

CHICAGO — After an excellent year, Boeing is counting its blessings, which include its competitor. They also include an anticipated doubling of the commercial aviation market in the next 20 years, which will require 27,000 new planes costing $2.6 trillion.
DENVER, Colorado, JAN. 18, 2007 (Zenit.org).- Archbishop Charles Chaput is questioning the new Colorado governor’s pledge to restore eligibility requirements for state-funded family planning programs.
Governor Bill Ritter, who ran with a pro-life platform, wants to allow organizations like Planned Parenthood to get state funding, if they can prove the money does not subsidize abortions.
Wall Street Journal Flemming Rose and Bjorn Lomborg January 18, 2007
Al Gore is traveling around the world telling us how we must fundamentally change our civilization due to the threat of global warming. Today he is in Denmark to disseminate this message. But if we are to embark on the costliest political project ever, maybe we should make sure it rests on solid ground. It should be based on the best facts, not just the convenient ones. This was the background for the biggest Danish newspaper, Jyllands-Posten, to set up an investigative interview with Mr. Gore. And for this, the paper thought it would be obvious to team up with Bjorn Lomborg, author of “The Skeptical Environmentalist,” who has provided one of the clearest counterpoints to Mr. Gore’s tune.
Ed. Good read. Long. You might want to print and read.
Commentary Magazine Wilfred M. McClay January 2007
Even before November’s midterm elections and the Republican party’s loss of its congressional majorities, there was widespread talk of the exhaustion, even death, of conservatism in America. Over the past year or so, indeed, every new day has seemed to bring another article or book on the subject. Gathering steam as the election approached, such inquests became as popular among conservatives themselves as among liberals. Each offered a distinctive thesis or complaint relating to a perceived malfeasance of the Bush administration, whether in foreign policy, social policy, homeland security, domestic spending, corruption, or any number of other areas.

A Dispatches reporter attends mosques run by organizations whose public faces are presented as moderate and finds preachers condemning integration into British society, condemning democracy and praising the Taliban for killing British soldiers.
