Vatican’s fury over Madonna ‘blasphemy’
Daily Mail August 3, 2006
Rome’s Catholic, Muslim and Jewish leaders have united to condemn pop star Madonna’s decision to stage a mock-crucifixion when she performs in the Italian capital on Sunday a stone’s throw away from Vatican City.
The lapsed-Catholic diva’s latest irreverent performance sees her wearing a fake crown of thorns and descending on a suspended, glittery cross as part of her worldwide “Confessions Tour”.
Having already been criticised in the United States, Catholics priests from across the Eternal City have gone one further saying the act is blasphemy.

It’s a kind of a catch-22 situation for the Vatican to take the bait, because ‘fury’ is exactly the reaction Madonna is hoping for. I remember her saying something akin to that about her ‘Like a Prayer’ video once.
It might be more effective to approach this as a ridiculous act by a ridiculous person. Leave her alone and her stage act will collapse under its own weight.
After all the Mel Gibson furor, why am I not surprised that no one except a few Christians have objected to Madonna’s obviously anti-Christian bigotry?
