"California deserves a truly pro-choice Governor," says Angelides, joining women's health leaders in Sacramento.
SACRAMENTO, CA -- California State Treasurer and Democratic candidate for Governor Phil Angelides today joined women's health leaders and 33 women in Sacramento to commemorate the 33rd anniversary of the Supreme Court's landmark decision legalizing a woman's right to choose. Angelides affirmed his support for a woman's right to choose, and condemned Governor Schwarzenegger for his support of anti-choice policies. Angelides spoke on Friday at Sacramento's Women's Health Specialists.
"California has always been a leader in the protection of reproductive rights," said Angelides. "As a husband and the father of three daughters, I will always fight to protect Roe vs. Wade and stand up to the Bush-Schwarzenegger efforts to make it harder for women to have access to safe, professional medical attention."
"Governor Schwarzenegger endorsed the anti-choice Proposition 73, the anti-choice President Bush, and is hiring the person responsible for managing the anti-choice Judge Alito's confirmation in the U.S. Senate," said Angelides. "California deserves a truly pro-choice Governor."
Proposition 73, the anti-choice initiative supported by Governor Schwarzenegger, was rejected by voters in November's special election. Governor Schwarzenegger campaigned actively for President Bush, speaking at Bush's GOP convention and campaigning by the President's side in the critical state of Ohio in the campaign's final days. And recent reports have indicated that Schwarzenegger has agreed to hire Steve Schmidt to manage his re-election campaign. Schmidt, who formerly served as senior aide to Vice President Dick Cheney, is currently leading the Bush administration's efforts to secure confirmation for Supreme Court Justice nominee Samuel Alito.
